At a time when international markets crises ends, the gross of national product of the Czech Republic is slowly growing again. Foreign companies are continuing to invest. Countries of the European Union represent two thirds of the Czech Republic’s trade volume and are its most important trading partners. Of all these countries Germany leads the way.
The Czech Republic has a long tradition as an industrial nation and is attractive for foreign investors. The privatisation process of the former state-run companies is ongoing. There are plans, for example, to sell Czech shares in the communication company Ceský Telecom and to privatise the electricity sector.
Now that the Czech Republic is part of the EU, and customs have been lifted, the regions of Bohemia and Moravia have become increasingly interesting. Currently, joint ventures between German and Czech companies are being founded. An especially progressive area is the three-country-corner which includes the towns of Zittau (Germany), Hradek nad Nisou (Czech Republic) and Bogatynia (Poland). In the coming years the creation of a cross-border business zone is planned. It will enable the towns to profit from a common infrastructure, as well as the marketing of commercial space.
